Instructions & usage
River to the Sea is a Geography printable for looking closely, building vocabulary and trying simple map-making. The black-and-white artwork uses clear outlines and open space rather than crowded decorative borders.
Choose your files
Choose a colouring page and a separate observation-and-map activity sheet, each in A4 or US Letter. Letter sheets use US color spelling. The illustrated landscapes and maps are imaginary and are not to scale.
How to use this printable
Begin with the large picture. Talk about what you notice, then choose colours. On the activity sheet, invent symbols, sketch a map or describe a route. Children can explain their choices verbally before writing. These are open-ended design tasks with many valid responses, so there is no single answer key.
At home
Look closely together, name the features you can see and discuss how you would represent them on a simple map. Let your child choose colours and explain their choices.
In the classroom or OSHC
Use the observation sheet for paired map-making. Compare the symbols and routes children invent; these open-ended tasks have many valid responses.
Extend the activity
Make a small map key using clear symbols. Swap maps with a partner and ask whether the symbols are easy to understand. Use words such as near, far, beside and between to describe where features are placed. Keep real-world map observations separate from invented landscapes.
Printing and support
Print a test page at actual size and check its preview before downloading. Suggested ages 6–10 are guidance; younger children may need a reader. Use pencils and colouring materials. Share the resource page rather than uploading its PDFs elsewhere.
