Instructions & usage

Australian Children’s Book Week celebrates books and reading. Its dates and theme are set by the Children’s Book Council of Australia. Keep older themed sheets clearly labelled with their year.

What is included?

Choose individual files from this free pack. A4 and US Letter versions are provided; puzzle answer sheets are separate. Open the preview to check each file before printing at actual size.

At home

Read a chosen book aloud, then draw a favourite scene. Keep the author and title nearby so children can label their work.

In the classroom

Use with any chosen book rather than an unverified annual theme. Compare two interpretations of a character and ask children to point to clues in the text.

Reflection prompts

  • Draw a scene from a book you chose. Add the title and author.
  • Describe a character using evidence from the story.
  • Invent a different ending. How does it change the story?

Use a pencil for puzzles and choose colouring materials for the illustration. Read the instructions together first. Younger children may need a reader; suggested ages are guidance, not a requirement. The drawing prompts have many valid responses and do not need an answer key.
