Instructions & usage
A small island with a number limit. Build your total without going past twenty.
Number Island is a shared-sheet game for two players. Closest total to 20 wins; equal totals draw. No subtracting claimed cells.
Players: 2 · Time: about 15 minutes · Equipment: Pencils.
How to play
- Share the island. A uses X; B uses O. Take turns claiming an empty cell.
- After your first cell, each claim must share an edge with one you own.
- Your total may NEVER exceed 20. If no legal claim, pass.
- End when both pass in succession or the board is full.
- Closest total to 20 wins; equal totals draw. No subtracting claimed cells.
Example of a turn
A total of 17 may add a touching 3 but not a 4.

At home and in the classroom
Print one sheet per pair and agree who starts before playing. Read the example aloud, then let the pair check the printed rules when needed. Use the number choices to practise explaining a calculation, rather than rewarding speed alone.
Try a variation
Cooperative: help both players reach exactly 20.
