Instructions & usage
Meet Maiasaura with a free dinosaur colouring page made for a quiet creative activity at home, in the classroom or at OSHC. A large, friendly dinosaur fills its own prehistoric scene, with bold outlines and open spaces for pencils or crayons. The outlined name at the top can be coloured too.
Look for: A dinosaur known from nesting sites
Maiasaura is known from fossils found at nesting sites. The drawing is a simplified cartoon reconstruction, with an imagined setting. It is a starting point for noticing this dinosaur’s features, rather than a scientific scale diagram. You can choose your own colours; the page does not claim to show the animal’s original appearance.
At home
Print one page and read the dinosaur’s name together. Before reaching for crayons, look closely at its head, body, legs and tail. Count the drawn eggs, then explain that three is an illustration choice, not a fossil clutch count. Let your child choose a few favourite colours or try a new combination. Afterwards, ask them to point to one detail that helps them recognise this dinosaur. They could tell a short imaginary story about the scene or display their finished picture beside another dinosaur page.
In the classroom
Use this sheet as a calm arrival activity, a dinosaur-topic art choice or an early-finisher task. Invite children to describe the shapes they notice before colouring. Compare the picture with a museum reconstruction using the reference below. Discuss which parts of an extinct animal can be studied from fossils and which details in a cartoon are imaginative. Different sheets are not drawn at the same scale, and the dinosaurs in this collection did not all live together.
Choose your download
There are two one-page black-and-white PDF files: A4 with UK/Australian colour spelling, and US Letter with US color spelling. Each file has its own preview so you can check the page before downloading. Select the size that matches your paper and print at actual size. Suggested ages 4–9 are guidance; younger children may need help reading the name. No answer key is needed for this open-ended colouring activity.
More dinosaur pages
Pair this printable with another long-neck, armoured dinosaur, horned dinosaur or feathered dinosaur. Look for differences in silhouettes rather than judging size from these separate illustrations. Find more choices in our dinosaur colouring collection.
