Read the clues aloud and solve a few together before trying the remaining spaces independently. Encourage children to explain why an answer fits, then check it against crossing letters. A dictionary or a book about the puzzle topic can become part of the activity.
In the classroom
Let pairs discuss possible answers before writing in the grid. Follow the puzzle with a short vocabulary activity: ask each pair to create a new clue for one of the answers. Keep any supplied answer file for checking rather than handing it out with the puzzle.
Before you print, check the resource’s instructions and available paper sizes. Choose the files you need, open a preview and try one test copy. Where several files are offered, you can select individual worksheets and keep answer sheets separate.
