Instructions & usage
Coasts and Islands is a Geography printable for looking closely, building vocabulary and trying simple map-making. The black-and-white artwork uses clear outlines and open space rather than crowded decorative borders.
Choose your files
US and UK spelling are each available on A4 and US Letter, with matching separate solution sheets. Titles, grid letters and word banks have colourable outlines. The border has two small corner drawings and a simple line.
How to use this printable
Find ten words in the 12-by-12 grid. Words run right, down, diagonally down-right or diagonally up-right. Cross each word off the bank, then colour the outlined letters and simple border. Use the matching solution to check.
At home
Read the word bank together and discuss which words describe a place or a feature. Start with a familiar word, find its first letter and check the following letters. Compare the puzzle vocabulary with a map or a picture book.
In the classroom or OSHC
Choose the spelling edition that matches your classroom. Invite pairs to explain their search strategy, then draw a simple scene using three words from the bank. Compare their ideas without treating one drawing as the only correct answer.
Extend the activity
Make a small map key using clear symbols. Swap maps with a partner and ask whether the symbols are easy to understand. Use words such as near, far, beside and between to describe where features are placed. Keep real-world map observations separate from invented landscapes.
Printing and support
Print a test page at actual size and check its preview before downloading. Suggested ages 6–10 are guidance; younger children may need a reader. Use pencils and colouring materials. Share the resource page rather than uploading its PDFs elsewhere.
